WordPress vs. Squarespace vs. Wix

With all kinds of “free” website builders out there, sometimes it’s tough to figure out which one to use for your new website. We’ve taken a look at 3 of the top website builders on a market and have come to a conclusion of which one is the best. To us, we believe that WordPress is the best website builder out of the bunch, find out exactly why below.

Flexibility and Customization

WordPress is the most flexible of all the 3 options. By flexibility, I mean that WordPress has thousands of plugins, themes, and tools that are currently available, and more being created everyday. With so many plugins, you’re bound to find something that will work for you, where as Wix might be more challenging. Squarespace is a different story all together, they don’t even allow for 3rd party plugins, while this ensures that everything will work correctly 100% of the time (since Squarespace builds all the functionality) it can get frustrating if you’re use to certain plugins from other websites you use.

Pricing – Hosting, Fee’s

Another benefit of using WordPress is the price. If you use the WordPress tool online to host your website, it can get pricey. A hack that you can do instead, is to download WordPress to your machine and start creating your site on your laptop/desktop. Doing so will allow you to create your website at your own pace, allowing you to take as long as you need. Once you’ve completed with your website, all you have to do is find someone to host your website for you. (shameless plug, but Web Nerd Hosting can get you set up with hosting) This allows you to not have to pay any extra fees, just hosting. Wix and Squarespace, on the other hand, don’t allow for something like this. Wix does offer free and low cost options, but the bad part is that Wix will put ads on your site, ads that you don’t benefit from. Squarespace doesn’t offer any free options at all, making it potentially more expensive to go with either Wix or Squarespace vs WordPress.

Ease of Use

While I’ve been raving about WordPress this whole review, I do have to say, that both Wix and Squarespace are probably more simple if all you’re looking for is a nice looking website. With WordPress, you have to be a little more involved then with the other 2. There are a lot of options that you have to pick, some of which will not look good. Also, there’s a learning curve to figure out where everything is and how to implement it. Wix and Squarespace are more intuitive, with easy to use drag and drop tools. While WordPress does have plugins to allow for drag and drop tools as well, it would be nice if these came right out of the box, to make things easier for first time website builders.

Ownership and Control

One of the issues that I have most with Wix and Squarespace is the inability to move your website from 1 hosting company to another. With WordPress, you can move your website to practically any Hosting company that you want. Another cool feature is the ability to import and export your site, making it super simple to get your website on another hosting service ASAP.

Online Store Issues

One of the downsides to Wix and Squarespace is that they both charge extra to be able to create an online store. With WordPress, you can install the very popular WooCommerce plugin, and be able to create a whole store on your website! This plugin easily will let you take PayPal, along with major credit cards. The best part of Woo Commerce, it’s free for the basic version, which includes everything you will need to be able to get an online store off the ground.

Overall Verdict

Overall, I do believe that WordPress is the best website builder to use, with the customization, prices, and control I believe that you get a website builder that you can use for a long time.
